Disclaimer: I'm a Drupal dev and use it professionally.

I have not worked with Joomla in a very long time, but the general consensus
from people who have more experience with it seems to be that Joomla has a
lower initial learning curve than Drupal, but Drupal will scale to more
complex use cases and designs far more easily than Joomla will. Drupal also
relies on its vast array of contributed modules more heavily than Joomla
does; pretty much no one builds a Drupal site without using a handful of
common contrib modules. That is by design.

There is a Chicago Drupal users group where you can go for more information:

http://cdmug.org/
http://drupal.meetup.com/1/

We have monthly meetings and welcome newcomers who want to learn about "this
Drupal thing". We can also offer "test drives".

"If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of
exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea,
which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to
himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession
of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it." -- Thomas
Jefferson
