The format is called the "cookie-jar" format, and is
dirt-simple[1]:

Record separators is simply '%%\n'.  That is, two percent
signs on a line by themselves.  Text is otherwise
free-form, and records can span multiple lines. 

[1] Dirt really isn't simple, it's incredibly complicated,
with all manner of different materials and forms of life
making up its composition.
