[UFO Chicago] Voice Recognition / Dictation Software

Greetings, folks. I'd like to try and get into voice recognition again,
to see if it's at all usable these days.

I know that on the Windows side of things, IBM ViaVoice is Da Schitz for
voice software, though Word XP comes with its own Dragon Naturally
Speaking-based (I think) dictation software. There's also a version of
ViaVoice for Linux, apparently. While I am not adverse to buying
software or even to close-source software, under the right
circumstances, I am wary of shelling out bucks for a program of that
size and cost when I don't know if the technology is ready yet. I'd
also rather use an OSS/FS program if a decent one exists. And, well,
I'm cheap. :-)

So, does anyone have any experience with GNU/Linux-based voice
recognition systems, preferably F/free ones? I've found a bunch of
links online courtesy of Goggle, but they all appear to be (a) dead and
not updated since 2000 or (b) not a program but an engine for one to
build a program around, which I am not interested in at this point or
(c) all of the above. The lone exception is, you guessed it, IBM
ViaVoice.

What else should I be looking at, or is this something that's not quite
mature enough on GNU-friendly platforms yet?

And yeah, I won't be at this week's meeting either. Birthday dinner for
mom. I'm not avoiding you folks, really, it's just things keep coming
up. :-)
