Thanks for the suggestions.  I have inserted comments below as to how I 
have addressed these in the guide.

I put the following note in the section on kernel building:

The instructions below are very brief and are intended for someone who 
has previous experience building custom kernels. A more detailed 
explanation of the kernel building process can be found in the Kernel 
Rebuild Guide by Kwan Lowe.  (There is a hyperlink to Kwan's document.)

I hesitate to do this since some advanced readers may want to configure 
support for other hardware.  For example, I always include support for 
my SCSI card.  It doesn't hurt anything it just makes a bigger kernel.

Good idea.  It's changed.

I took this out entirely.  I think that the new instructions for 
building the image (using 4096 with mke2fs and dd) make this unnecessary.
