I have never tried building on cygwin, in fact I've never even used
cygwin, but I've got to say that's a really cool idea.

As far as building mke2fs, can you send some example of the error to the
mailing list?  Something like the last 10 lines of "make" output would
be good.  I'm wondering if you are having a cygwin related problem or if
it's just a general problem with mke2fs.
