Getting basic network support is not too difficult, but there probably
will not be enough space on the rootdisk.

You need binaries. Search LDP for a package called net-tools and search
freshmeat.net for several packages called netkit-XXX. The XXX being
base, combo, ftp, tftp or whatever you are looking for.

You'll also need the files /etc/services and /etc/protocols to make
things work. I think netkit-base has sample files and the actual
information in the files comes from
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers and
http://www.iana.org/assignments/protocol-numbers.

One other thing you need to watch out for is the additional library
requirements for some of the netkit packages. Things like ping and tftp
are not a problem, but I think ftp requires ncurses.
