I would be really interested in knowing whether anyone has actually
tested that hypothesis.  When I type

   convert filea.ps fileb.gif

for appropriate values of filea and fileb, the output file is always
totally black.

In case it makes a difference, here are the first 5 lines of output
from "convert -V" on my current system:
