Esteemed Colleagues:

I remember when gs could convert PostScript to GIF (e.g.,
gs -sDEVICE=gifmono, gs -sDEVICE=gif8).  Then it stopped
being able to do so, presumably because someone thought
that the GIF format was patented, and feared that the
patent would be enforced.  Patents don't last forever,
though, and in fact they are surprisingly short-lived.
When is gs going to be able to produce GIF output again?
