Hi --

I would very very strongly encourage everyone on this list to read this
article titled "Did my brother write the first email?" It intertwines the
author's personal history with the history of email and computing at MIT.

It's very well written, contains lots of detail about the origins of the
lab that spawned Multics, time-sharing computing, man pages, email, and
more and more. There are tons of footnotes and extra links so there's a
lot to follow if you have time.

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/19/did-my-brother-invent-e-mail-with-tom-van-vleck-part-one/

It also includes a (flash) simulator of what it was like to send an email
on multics c. 1965. and includes same basic samples of the source code
used to run the program.

I can't recommend this highly enough.
