The government effort to rescue the economy cost easily more, even in
adjusted dollars, than the Lousiana Purchase, the Apollo moon shot, or
the Korean War. The US's $17 billion investment in AIG alone cost more
than the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe -- such is the penalty for
speculative excess. In total, the US committed more than $12 trillion
to various forms of relief, but most of that (such as funds set aside
for potential losses) will likely never be spent. Actual expeitures
will likely fall in the range of $3.5-$4 trillion, fifteen times the
cost of the S&L bailout of the late 1980s.
