Grab a copy of the UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/),
and boot off of it.  It has several secure deletion
programs.

Realistically, your dd invokation will be sufficient,
unless you are worried about people with access to very
expensive electron microscopes, and are clueful enough to
magentic domain analysis.
