[UFO Chicago] GPS devices?

Anyone have any suggestions or comments for GPS devices
that play nicely with Linux or one of the BSD variants (OSX
included)?

I've been looking at a few of the Garmin models.  They use
their own protocol (not NEMA), but it appears to be fairly
well documented.
