The Chicago Wireless Freenet, a project to start
a community wirless mesh network here in
Chicago.

What is community wireless?
It is creating our own access points for the
internet, file sharing, messaging and streaming
video. We can create our own infrastructure free
from the control of government, phone companies
and other various entrenched hierarchies, using
802.11b technology. We are providing access to
the resources and doing it ourselves and the
more involvement and usage the better.

The Meeting
It will be at 6pm at the Azone 2129 N.
Milwaukee, easily accessible from the Blue Line,
in between the western and california El tracks,
right next to the congress theatre.

We will be discussing gathering resources such
as 802.11b equipment. Figuring out antenna
designs and testing them. Deciding upon initial
steps towards the creation of a mesh network in
the wicker park/logan square area. If you want
to start an initiative in your neighborhood we
will assist.

So anyone who is interested in helping plan out
and create the network should come and get
involved. This is not just a meeting of the tech
savy but could benefit from grassroots activists
who want to do other work as well in order to
reclaim the airwaves for the people.
