I personally much prefer majordomo's email interface to mailman's
email interface, so as an end user i like majordomo better than
mailman.  pipermail (mailman's web archiver) is simple to set up, but
(again, this is a year ago. much has probably changed) it had trouble
with mime. 

that said, mailman does seem to be popular. i just wish i could turn
off montly reminders as an end-user.
