This is an uber-common issue.

Make sure you have xfonts-100dpi, xfonts-75dpi, and xfonts-base
installed.

Try removing and reinstalling the package. But I'm almost positive
it's a missing package, that seems liek it shoudl be a dependency, but
really shouldn't be, so you expect it to be there, but it's not.

And I think it's xfonts-base.
